Meaning "Little Mountain" in Italian, the word Monticello is also the home of former American President Thomas Jefferson. After viewing the grounds of Monticello, one can understand how it got its name. With an expansive 360 degree view of the surrounding Central Virginia area, a visit to Monticello not only provides breathtaking views but also an informative short history highlighting Mr. Jefferson's life. If views and history aren't enough to entice you to visit Charlottesville, the following reasons might:
1 // The House - French style meets Southern charm. From Mr. Jefferson's intricate architectural designs and features, to his infusion of European traditions and decorations, the plantation offers hours of amusement for both designer and history nerds alike. My favorite rooms include the Entrance Hall and Parlor which are blanketed with European and American artifacts, such as antlers from the American West, paintings of inspirational philosophers and esteemed colleagues, and Native American artifacts.
2 // The Grounds and Gardens - To say Mr. Jefferson had a love for gardens is an understatement. The plantation's gardens are impressive not only for its size but also for its agricultural diversity and design. I like to imagine my future home featuring a garden pavilion such as the one Mr. Jefferson had, where I could read like he did: "The pavilion was used by Jefferson as a quiet retreat where he could read in the evening" (Monticello).
3 // In His Footsteps - Experience Mr. Jefferson's private life by experiencing a day in his life. You'll learn about who came through his front doors, where guests waited how they were entertained, and even where he took his last breath.
4 // Museum and Artifacts - With recent additions, the visitor center now includes access to a large museum showcasing the plantation's artifacts, Mr. Jefferson's inventions, educational films, and more.
5 // Monticello Shop - If you're anything like me, I adore colonial style, busts, history books, Jefferson cups, and all things Southern. The shop includes many of these items and many more (take a sneak online).
6 // Day Trip Itinerary - Monticello's close proximity to Downtown Charlottesville, and other historic homes and places makes it an ideal candidate to be one of a few activities on a day trip itinerary. I recommend pairing a Monticello tour with a quintessential Southern cuisine at Michie Tavern and apple picking, wine tasting and donut eating at Carter Mountain Apple Orchard. Other possible combinations include a visit to Ash Lawn-Highland, Trump Winery, Downtown Charlottesville, and the University of Virginia.
Hopefully by now you're convinced that you must visit this place during your lifetime. I visited during a bright, cold day, so while these pictures don't do it justice, I'll no doubt return again to capture its true beauty (especially in the spring/fall).
